Dominant Swiatek Wins Third Straight French Open Title
Iga Swiatek has once again demonstrated her dominance on the clay courts, securing her third consecutive French Open 2024 title with a resounding victory over Italian 12th seed Jasmine Paolini. The world number one triumphed with a 6-2, 6-1 win, solidifying her status as the queen of Roland Garros.
Swiatek's Unstoppable Run
Poland’s Swiatek, continuing her recent supremacy at the French Open 2024, overcame an early break to win 11 of the next 12 games, sealing the match in just 68 minutes. This victory marks her fourth French Open title and her fifth Grand Slam overall, having also won the 2022 US Open.
“I love this place, I wait every year to play here,” Swiatek said after her win, which placed her alongside Monica Seles and Justine Henin as the only players in the Open era to claim a ‘three-peat’ in women’s singles at Roland Garros.
Breaking Records
At just 23, Swiatek has become the youngest player in the Open era to win four French Open titles. After her swift victory, she celebrated by sinking to her knees and dancing around the court, a testament to her joy and dominance.
In her runners-up speech, Paolini acknowledged the challenge, saying, “To play you here is the toughest challenge in this sport. It’s been an intense 15 days, and today was tough, but I’m really proud of myself.”
Swiatek's Dominance in Stats
Swiatek entered the French Open 2024 in superb form, having already won WTA titles in Madrid and Rome. Her journey to the title was marked by several standout performances:
- She has won 21 matches in a row at the French Open, the fourth-longest streak in women’s singles in the Open era.
- She has won 35 of her 37 career matches at Roland Garros.
- Swiatek has not lost in Paris since 2021.
- After saving match point against Naomi Osaka in the second round, she won 64 of 81 games on her way to the title.
- Only Chris Evert (seven), Steffi Graf (six), and Justine Henin (four) have won more French Open titles than Swiatek.
- She dropped the fewest games in a French Open final since Henin’s win in 2007.
The Road to Victory
Swiatek’s path to the French Open 2024 title saw her overcoming various challenges with ease. Naomi Osaka came closest to beating her, pushing Swiatek to a match point before the top seed recovered. A 40-minute ‘double bagel’ over Anastasia Potapova in the fourth round and a dominant quarter-final performance against Marketa Vondrousova underscored her dominance.
In the semi-finals, US Open champion Coco Gauff put up a fight, but Swiatek once again asserted her control. Few believed that Paolini could cause an upset in the final, and after a confident start, Swiatek quickly found her rhythm and dominated the match.
Swiatek’s emphatic victory in the French Open 2024 final further cements her legacy as one of the sport’s greats and sets the stage for more historic achievements in the future.
